Caño Cristales, also known as the ‘river of seven colors’ due to its splendor and array of color, is located in the southern part of the national park Serranía La Macarena, close to La Macarena village. With crystal clear waters, flowing into beautiful waterfalls that form natural pools, is an exotic landscape where the eyes of visitors can marvel at such beauty creating a feeling of peace, harmony, tranquility and enjoyment.
It is impossible not to be astounded by such beauty and even more in the rainy season from June to November/December, when the Macarenia Clavijera (aquatic plants) is at the top of its splendor, with a red tone that becomes more intense and bright due to sunlight, changing colors from green to dark orange and even yellow.
Its waters come from the rainfalls that run down from the Serranía de la Macarena, which is about 120 km long, 30 km wide and on an altitude of 1600m above sea level. It is the meeting point between the Amazon jungle, the Orinoco and the Andes, in addition to this it has three climatic zones and offers a great variety of fauna and flora.
According to studies by the National University of Colombia, the Sierra de la Macarena park has a biodiversity of over 1592 plant species, 772 recorded species of fauna and is believed to have more than 17 of the 62 types of ecosystems in the country corresponding to 27.4% in only a 3.14% of the surface of the country.
Day1
- Leaving Bogotá at 4am by bus with destination Villavicencio
- Flight to village of La Macarena leaving in between 8:30am and 9:30am (Cessna or DC3 airplane)
- Arrival at village of La Macarena
- Leave your baggage in the hotel in the village and get ready for the tour
- Leaving for tour to Caño Cristales
- Boat transport on Rio Guayabero and then transport by Jeep to Caño Cristales
- Start of the ecological walk
- Visit of the left branch of Caño Cristales: Cascada de los Cuarzos, La Piedra de la Virgen, Los Pianos and La Cascada del Amor
- Lunch onsite (basic food)
- Return to village of La Macarena around 3:30pm, same way as you entered, first transportation by land, then by boat
- Dinner and relax at hotel
Day2
- Breakfast in the hotel
- Leaving the hotel early in the morning
- Boat transport on Rio Guayabero and then transport by Jeep to Caño Cristales
- Start of the ecological walk
- Visit of the right branch of Caño Cristales: El Sillón de Buda, El Paso, Pozo Cuadrado, Escalera and Salto del Águila
- Lunch onsite (basic food)
- Return to village of La Macarena around 3:30pm, same way as you entered, first transportation by land, then by boat
- Dinner and relax at hotel
Day3
- Breakfast in the hotel
- Leaving the hotel early in the morning
- Boat transport on Rio Guayabero and then transport by Jeep to Caño Cristales
- Start of the ecological walk
- Visit of the right branch of Caño Cristales: Cascada de la Virgen, Los Estrechos, El Pailón and El Monte de las Marimbas
- Lunch onsite (basic food)
- Return to village of La Macarena around 3:30pm, same way as you entered, first transportation by land, then by boat
- Dinner and relax at hotel
Day4
- Breakfast in the hotel
- Leaving the hotel early in the morning
- Visit of Cristalitos, La Cascada or El Mirador
- Return to village of La Macarena around midday
- Lunch in La Macarena or in Villavicencio (depending on time of departure airplane)
- Flight to Villavicencio
- Arrival on Villavicencio Airport and transport by bus back to Bogotá
- End of our adventure
- Flight to La Macarena over the Llanos Orientales in Cessna or DC3
- Crossing the Río Guayabero on boat
- Visit Caño Cristales with its stunning natural beauty
- Discover the village of La Macarena
