EMERALDS IN CHIVOR
DISCOVER THE GREEN MAGIC!
Chivor and its surroundings are famous for having some of the best emeralds worldwide. The Emerald is the 3rd gemstone after Ruby and Diamond. In Chivor’s pre-Hispanic origins, two indigenous races that populated these territories were present: the Chibchas or Muiscas and the Caribe. The word Chivor in Chibcha language means “green and rich land”. Currently most people in Chivor are engaged in agricultural work and especially the exploitation of emeralds.
Enjoy the experience of visiting the Emerald Market, where the miners sell their stones. Learn from the depth of a mine, the entire process of exploitation of emeralds and appreciate the beautiful scenery, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, fauna & flora.

Day1
- Leaving Bogotá in the afternoon
- Dinner and accommodation in Garagoa
Day2
- Breakfast in Garagoa
- Leaving early in the morning towards the village of Chivor
- Arrival in Chivor and tour through the village
- Handover of protective gear, then leaving to the the emerald mines in jeep-type vehicles.
- Tour and exploration of the emerald mines. Taking pictures and videos.
- Return to the village of Chivor, typical lunch “Chivoreño”
- Show of how Emeralds are processed, on the marketplace of Chivor
- Demonstration of a mill, how sugar cane is processed, tasting of Guarapo (sugar cane drink)
- Return to Garagoa, along the riverside of reservoir La Esmeralda
- Arrival in Garagoa
- Dinner, transfer to accommodation and then a tour through the Parque Principal and its monument in honour to Mamapacha
Day3
- Breakfast in Garagoa
- Departure to the recreational center El Encanto or La Vaca
- Tour through the countryside, pool and lunch
- Boat tour on Laguna de Tota
- Returning to Bogotá at about 4pm
- Exploring the emerald mines
- Carving process of emeralds
- Demonstration of a sugar cane mill
- Enjoy the beautiful nature
