The ‘Nevado del Ruiz’ is a volcano located on the outskirts of Manizales in the Coffee Triangle. This is a tall and conical volcano, which has been active for about two million years. The ‘Ruiz’ belongs to the Park Los Nevados, where rivers spring, that supply the coffee region of Colombia (Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima) .The maximum height permitted to ascend is 5.125m of the 5.321m to the top. The road to the ‘Nevado’ is full of extraordinary geographical attractions including lakes, volcanic mountains, hot springs, among others. Ascending to the ‘Nevado’, vegetation gets more and more scarce, but the landscapes become more impressive. As it gets colder, the picture resembles that of a desert. When the day is clear, you can see the top of the mountain snow peaks. The abundant vegetation of the ‘Ruiz’ includes frailejones, valerians, grasslands, rosemary, among other plants, demonstrating the natural diversity of the place. Among the animals found here and being part of the list of protected species, is the Andean condor, the spectacled bear, the páramo hummingbird and the great thrush. If you are lucky, you might be able to observe them.
