The Sanctuary Las Lajas is located approximately 6 km from the town of Ipiales in the South of Colombia. This sanctuary lies in the midst of an amazing landscape with waterfalls and beautiful views.
Through a bridge located over a canyon at the river Guaítara, this architectural wonder can be accessed. The bridge is built amidst rocks and carved into their center. For this reason it is so popular and admired. This cathedral was built in veneration of the virgin ‘Nuestra Señora de Las Lajas’. It is a stunning work of neogothic style. Outside, there can be seen three needle shaped towers, decorated with beautiful windows. There are flat and wide stones surrounding it, better known as lajas (slabs), hence its name, typical of the region. The Sanctuary displays all its artistic and religious virtues amidst the lush vegetation and rough stone.
Las Lajas is listed as the most beautiful sanctuary in the world topographically speaking. Religiously, it is the most visited of South America plus architecturally, the most daring and original in Colombia.
