The National Park Cocuy is located 440 km from Bogotá. It consists of a mountainous formation of perpetual snow, located on the eastern mountain range, with a height between 2.750m and 5.330m. It is the second largest snow-peaked mountain range in Colombia.
Among the most important peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Cocuy are the ‘Ritacuba Blanco and Negro’, the ‘Pan de Azúcar’ with its emblematic rock ‘Púlpito del Diablo’, the ‘San Pablines’, the ‘Cóncavo’ and ‘Toti’.
In this park there are also beautiful lagoons, such as the ‘Laguna Grande de la Sierra’, ‘Laguna de Los Verdes’ and ‘Laguna de la Plaza’. Here is located the largest glacier of Colombia reaching over 4,800m. With 30 km in length and over 22 snow-capped peaks, it is South America’s largest continuous mass of snow.
It is a natural environment full of rocky landscapes, ice and snow, a beautiful páramo ecosystem and lagoons that lie within its broad valleys.

Expedition 4 days/ 3 nights:

Day0
- Leaving Bogotá in public transport at 8pm towards the village of El Cocuy.
- Duration of trip approx. 11-12 hours.
Day1
- Arrival at the village of El Cocuy early in the morning.
- Breakfast
- Registration at the office of the National Park.
- Transport up the mountains (approx. 1 hour) Enjoy the beautiful scenery.
- Hike from the cottage Los Herrera to our accommodation in the mountains. We pass through the valley of Río Lagunillas and from there you can appreciate the view on the snowy peaks of Pan de Azúcar and Campanillas.
- After two hours of hiking we get to the cottage and have lunch.
- Free time in the afternoon to rest, do walks for acclimatization around the nearby lagoons and enjoy the scenery.
Day2
- Breakfast
- Hiking of approx. 5 hours. Visit of the lagoons La Pintada, La Cuadrada, La Atravesada and La Parada. Optional walk to Boquerón de Cusirí at 4,400m above sea level, where you can appreciate a view over the valley of Río Lagunillas with its breathtaking scenery.
- Return to the cottage and lunch.
- Free afternoon to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Day3
- Breakfast
- Hike to the edge of snow at 4,900m above sea level, on the foot of the imposing Púlpito del Diablo (4 hour climb). On our way we can observe the peaks of Campanillas Negro and Blanco. From the Paso del Conejo with an altitude of 4,500m, there is a view on the Púlpito del Diablo and the summit of Pan de Azúcar.
- Optional summit attempt to Pan de Azúcar (with planning in advance).
- Time to enjoy the scenery and the snow.
- Return to the cottage and lunch.
- Hike back to the cottage Los Herrera through the valley of Río Lagunillas.
- Transport from the cottage Los Herrera to the village El Cocuy.
- Accommodation in the hotel and dinner.
Day4
- In the morning return to Bogotá in public transport.
- Arrival in Bogotá at approx. 5:00pm.

- Extensive hike (approx. 10 hours) to the Laguna Grande de la Sierra, where more than 5 peaks of over 5,000m (Concavito, Cóncavo, Portones, Toti, Pan de Azúcar) can be observed. On the way we pass by the cave Cueva de la Cuchumba, the valley Valle de los Frailejones and the cave Cueva de los Hombres.
- Return in the afternoon to the Hacienda La Esperanza.
- Transport to the cottages Kanwara, located in the northern Sierra.
- Accommodation in the cottage and dinner.
Day5
- Breakfast
- Hike to the Ritacuba Blanco (5,330m), duration of 4 hours to get to the edge of the snow.
- Optional summit attempt to Ritacuba Blanco (with planning in advance, duration 2 hours).
- Time to enjoy the landscape and snow of the highest summit of the Sierra del Cocuy.
- Descent to the cottages and lunch.
- Return in transport to the village of El Cocuy.
- Accommodation in the hotel and dinner.
Day6
- In the morning return to Bogotá in public transport.
- Arrival in Bogotá at approx. 5:00pm.
