TATACOA DESERT
SHELTER WITH STARS AND ENJOY AN UNEQUALLED LANDSCAPE!
The Tatacoa Desert is located in the north of the department Huila. It is the second largest arid zone in Colombia after the Guajira peninsula. Here temperature reaches 45°C during the day. It is one of the most interesting landscapes in Colombia. In this dry area, there are animals like scorpions, snakes, eagles, turtles, rodents, spiders, lizards, and ocelots. Due to weather conditions, there are many interesting varieties of cacti. Some of its surrounding areas are distinguished by their color, ocher in the area of ‘Cuzco’ and gray in the ‘Los Hoyos’ area. Enjoy walking the gray canyons and refresh yourself in the natural pools.
In the desert there is an observatory where you can enjoy the starry night sky, which is one of the main attractions here. Every night the observatory gives an interesting presentation about the solar system, shows various constellations that are visible and gives you the opportunity to look through the telescope.
In July the festival ‘Fiesta de Estrellas’ takes place, where astronomers and related organizations of all over Colombia get together, to learn more about the desert, give talks and watch this fantastic natural spectacle.
Enjoy the silence, landscape and tranquility of this place. Also, it is a place appreciated by geologists and archaeologists due to the presence of material related to these disciplines.
